Istanbul is large, layered and busy. A good first itinerary does not try to see everything. It groups places that sit close together, leaves room for rest, and uses the water to move between neighborhoods.
Think in areas, not attractions
Look at a map before you plan each day. The historic peninsula, the districts north of the Golden Horn and the Asian side across the Bosphorus each make a natural focus for a day or half-day.
A sample structure
- Day one: the historic peninsula, with major monuments in the morning and a slower afternoon.
- Day two: neighborhoods north of the Golden Horn, with time to walk and stop for food.
- Day three: a ferry across the Bosphorus to spend time on the Asian side.
Before you book
- Check opening days and any dress requirements for places of worship you plan to visit.
- Look up current entry rules for your nationality on official government sources.
- Plan your arrival: how you will get from the airport to your accommodation, and roughly how long it takes.
