Lisbon is a walking city with a catch: many of its most atmospheric neighborhoods sit on steep hills. Planning your days around the terrain saves energy and leaves more time to enjoy the views.
Walk downhill when you can
Use public transport to reach the top of a hill, then explore on foot as you make your way down. Comfortable shoes with good grip matter more here than in many cities.
Plan around viewpoints
Lisbon’s miradouros (viewpoints) make natural pauses in a walk. Choose one or two per day rather than trying to collect them all, and think about the light: mornings and late afternoons are often the most pleasant times to be outside.
Trams and other transport
The historic trams are part of the city’s character and can be busy. Check current routes, fares and ticket options with the city’s official transport operator before you go.
- Keep valuables secure in crowded vehicles and viewpoints.
- Allow more time than a map suggests for uphill walks.
- Carry water on warm days.
